Samsung Announces Second-Generation Chromebook Plus

Samsung's Chromebook Plus (V2) gets turbocharged with an Intel processor

Successor to last year's Chromebook Plus, the Samsung Chromebook Plus v2 has been announced on Thursday by the South Korean giant in New Jersey, US. The V2 will run on an Intel Celeron Processor 3965Y to boost the speed from last year's model, which ran on an ARM processor, according to Samsung's press release. We also don't have very long to wait before it's available, as Samsung is launching the Plus (V2) before the end of the month. The laptop also features Intel HD 615 graphics. Speaking of connectivity options, the Chromebook Plus V2 sports two USB Type-C ports, one USB 3.0 port, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Another big upgrade for this year's model is a secondary camera on the rear.

Samsung has now added a 13-Megapixel rear camera alongside the 1-Megapixel front camera that can be used for video calling and other purposes. Make that what you will of it, many would have preferred if Samsung had actually improved the device's display. There are stereo speakers built in to the Chromebook Plus V2, and the curved cap keyboard can withstand spills up to 60cc.

The Chromebook Plus (V2) has a 12.2-inch 1,920 x 1,080 full HD touchscreen display. "The features include Chrome OS, a built-in pen, and a 12.2" FHD 1920 × 1080 resolution screen which transforms the device from notebook to tablet to sketchbook - and back with two cameras. While 1080p will likely suit most users fine, many productivity enthusiasts still prefer the 3:2 aspect ratio popularized by Microsoft on its Surface lineup.

The new Samsung Chromebook Plus will cost $499, $50 more than its predecessor.

"Today's consumers want to be able to maximize their communication while also expressing their creativity wherever they are, and the new Samsung Chromebook Plus fulfills that need", Samsung's Alanna Cotton writes. But don't - there's a good chance Samsung is looking to futureproof the Pro with a second-generation model, so now's a bad time to pick one up.
