Yoel Romero Fails to Make Weight vs. Robert Whittaker, UFC 225 Not for Title

Yoel Romero Robert Whittaker

The UFC did not announce whether the fight would continue, but the two fighters were introduced and faced off at the ceremonial weigh-ins later on Friday. Ahead of his scheduled bout with undisputed middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 225 on Saturday in Chicago, Romero once again failed to make the required 185 pounds during the early weigh-in on Friday.

Cuban Romero, who failed to make the limit for his last fight in Perth in February, initially came in just under half a kilogram heavy and had two hours to lose the excess weight.

Yoel Romero has had two chances at UFC middleweight gold this year, and both times he couldn't capitalize on the opportunity by simply making the required weight.

No title fight for the main event but talks are ongoing about salvaging the fight.

Now fully healthy, Whittaker will be aiming to lift his professional MMA record to 20-4 with a second straight victory over Romero, the No. 1 contender in the UFC middleweight division. After falling to Whittaker last July, "Soldier of God" stepped up in place of the injured Whittaker to battle Rockhold for the interim title at UFC 221.

While Whittaker admits it's a "pain in the arse" to face the same man in consecutive fights, he is not one to pick and choose his opponents.

"I don't think he can change that drastically at his age and in this little amount of time before the fight", he said.

"The main event is on".

"This fight, as far as I'm concerned, I have 25 minutes to try to finish him - and I'm going to use every single second of those minutes to try to achieve that".
