Homeland Security Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen: We Don't Have A Policy Of Separating Families At The Border

Democrats, activists rally against Trump's family separation policy

Almost 2,000 children have been separated from their parents in the six week following the administration's announcement of a "zero-tolerance policy" against illegal border crossings.

Trump Jr. liked the tweet from right-wing website Breitbart, which quoted conservative pundit Ann Coulter's warning not to fall for "actor children", amid criticism of the Trump administration's policy of separating parents from their children at the border.

"The Attorney General directed United States Attorneys on the Southwest Border to prosecute all amenable adults who illegally enter the country, including those accompanied by their children, for 8 U.S.C. § 1325 (a), illegal entry".

President Donald Trump vowed on Monday that the United States would not become a "migrant camp" as he faced mounting pressure to stop families being separated as a deterrent to illegal immigration.

On Tuesday, President Trump is set to meet with Congress to discuss immigration, with two bills that will be heard on the house floor this week.

"While we must work towards a solution that reduces the occurrence of illegal border crossings, it is unacceptable to separate young children from their parents", Republican Rep. David Valadao of Hanford said in a statement to McClatchy. Have a say in our informal poll, and feel free to join the conversation in the comment section.

As a result, the children - who are not charged with a crime - are separated from the adults in their families.

"This administration has a simple message: If you cross the border illegally, we will prosecute you", she said. "Not going to happen in the US", Trump said.

"I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes", he said.

A major problem in the system, Nielsen said, is the way asylum seekers with children are treated differently by law if they are from countries besides Canada and Mexico.

In a Father's Day demonstration on Sunday, seven Democrat members of Congress from NY and New Jersey joined hundreds of protesters outside an immigration detention facility in New Jersey to protest the separations. "This is not new", she said.

In South Texas on Sunday, several Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Jeff Merkley, were due to tour detention facilities to call attention to the policy, while Representative Beto O'Rourke, who is running for the US Senate in Texas, said he would march with protesters to the border. Six-year-old Alison Jimena Valenica Madrid can be heard reciting the contact number of an aunt in the U.S. and begging the authorities to call her.

No previous administration has interpreted this as requiring the separation of parents from their children, instead releasing families with court dates for immigration proceedings and various monitoring tactics.

The DHS "is no longer ignoring the laws", enforcing them as they exist on the books, she said.
