Laura Bush Blasts Trump Administration for 'Immoral' Family Separations

One would limit, but not entirely prohibit, family separations, fund Trump's wall and give legal protections to young immigrants, known as "Dreamers", who were brought to the country illegally as children.

He has consistently blamed Democrats for the impasse, even though his fellow Republicans control both chambers in Congress. Democrats have accused the president of using children as hostages in the political dispute over immigration. Border Patrol agents are now referring nearly all illegal immigrants at the border for prosecution, and prosecutors are bringing cases against majority.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had not heard the audio but said children taken into custody by the government are being treated humanely.

On a related note is what's happening at the border - separating children from their parents - is this an administration policy? Melania Trump, Grisham told CNN on Sunday, "believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart". Bush, the wife of former President George W. Bush, penned a tweet over the weekend in which she echoed the widespread condemnation of the new directive from Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Attorneys at the hearings said the immigrants had brought two dozen boys and girls with them to the US, and the judge replied that he didn't know what would happen to their children.

"Those kids inside who have been separated from their parents are already being traumatized", said Democratic Sen.

Parents who are referred by border agents for prosecutions are held in federal jail, while their children are sent to separate detention facilities, some in remote locations.

Trump was due to meet Republicans in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as they prepared to vote on two immigration bills. Several religious groups, including some conservative ones, have pushed to stop the practice of separating immigrant children from their parents.

Steve Bannon argued that effort risked alienating Mr Trump's political base and contributing to election losses in November, when Republicans hope to preserve their congressional majorities.

He said the child separations are a function of current law, adding that "we're stuck with these disgusting laws".

She, too, put the onus on Democrats, saying if there are serious about overhauling the system, "they'll come together again and try to close these loopholes and get real immigration reform". She repeats the digits and announces, through tears: "My mommy says that I'll go with my aunt, and that she'll come to pick me up there as quickly as possible".

Democrats are pushing back against the president's claim that this controversy started because of "their" immigration law.

"As I have said many times before, if you are seeking asylum for your family, there is no reason to break the law and illegally cross between ports of entry", she tweeted.

Both Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama, have largely remained on the sidelines since leaving the White House last January, speaking out against the Trump administration only on rare occasions and often in a veiled manner.
