Kim’s China trip may complicate things for Trump

North Korea to hand over US troops remains ‘in next few days’ – report

During the Vietnam War, North Korean forces captured a U.S. Navy intelligence vessel and imprisoned 83 crew members who were released 11 months later. It has long proposed a "dual suspension", whereby North Korea stops weapons tests and the US and South Korea stop military drills, to encourage talks.

Pyongyang, which had pledged to return the remains of American soldiers unaccounted for since the end of the 1950-1953 Korean war, is expected to start transferring them in the coming days, Reuters reported, citing U.S. officials. In return Trump ordered the suspension of military exercises with South Korea, a longstanding demand of the Pyongyang regime.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday (Jun 21) that North Korea was blowing up four of its big test sites and that a process of "total denuclearisation. has already started taking place". As the poll was being conducted, Trump was embroiled in controversy over his administration's policy of separating children from their parents after border agents catch the families crossing into the USA illegally.

He added that, "it's the very front end of a process".

The United States launched 33 investigative and recovery missions into North Korea between 1996 and 2005, but those efforts ended as the political situation between Washington and Pyongyang deteriorated.

Following the historic summit between Donald Kim and Kim Jong-Un, the government of North Korea is expected to facilitate the return of the remains of approximately 200 USA soldiers who died during the Korean War.

"Presumably, if North Korea does destroy the Sohae facility, they are also signaling that they are willing to stop satellite/rocket launches this time around as well, a point that has derailed negotiations in the past and is a significant new development", she said.

He said U.S. officials had tried and failed to persuade the North Koreans to include language in the joint statement in Singapore committing to "complete, verifiable and irreversible" disarmament with a timetable for carrying it out by 2020. "I expect they will talk about the path going forward and where priorities should lie".

Kim chose Beijing for his first official foreign trip in March and met Xi again in May in the northeastern port city of Dalian.

Kim said the two countries are as close and friendly as family, and help each other, adding that Xi has offered affectionate care and support for the DPRK people.

Earlier this week, the US and South Korea announced they had agreed to suspend a joint military exercise scheduled for August, although decisions regarding subsequent drills have not yet been made.

Also, Pompeo dropped heavy hints in July 2017, right after North Korea began testing missiles that could hit the USA, that he'd like to separate Kim from power.

"They've said they want complete denuclearization".

China has encouraged Kim's shift toward economic development and has touted the prospects of more trade and investment if North Korea makes progress in talks on abandoning its nuclear weapons and long-range missile programs.
