England confident ahead of World Cup opener against Tunisia

Delph:

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate pointed to the "perspective" the war-ravaged history of Volgograd, which was formerly known as Stalingrad, had given his team ahead of the World Cup opener against Tunisia on Monday. Majority have very few global caps so the future is all ahead of them.

"Dele (Alli), Raheem Sterling, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, we have (Jamie) Vardy who scored regularly for his club at a high level in the Premier League, so I think it's important it isn't just one story". We can't wait to get started and obviously all the fans back home watching... we want to make them proud.

"We won't be able to roll them over", Delph added.

Having a laugh and a giggle hasn't been something that England teams have been known for over the past decade or so, when heavily hyped teams have failed to make much progress in any of the global tournaments they have played.

The cost and associated concerns over travelling to Russian Federation means the Three Lions would do that in front of a far smaller "dyed-in-the-wool" following than they are used to, but Southgate is confident of giving those in Russian Federation and at home something to shout about.

The overall record contrasts markedly with that in England's opening games at European Championships, where in nine appearances they have lost their first game on four occasions and drawn the other five. My granddad was a marine.

"Obviously I'd have to get back to England and then get back again, so that's obviously not ideal but it's part of life".

Against Tunisia he's likely to play with three at the back - John Stones, Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire - and another line of three, including two wing-backs, in front.

"I've enjoyed having the role and I think I was the best qualified person with the best experiences to take it at the time it came up".

"I've been speaking to the lads we've got at City, I spoke to Gareth often, so I've been well aware of what's been going on and what's been said in camp". He is meticulous and considered, he wants to be the best he can be and believes he can be one of the best in the world.

The Volgograd Arena stands on one of the major battlefields of the war - two million people died in the battle named after the city's former title of Stalingrad.
