Apple introduces watchOS 5, with more ways than ever to stay active and connected
Without giving specific numbers, he said the Apple Watch saw 60 percent growth a year ago.
Apple also acknowledges that with new data channels and interactive notifications, the Apple Watch will be bombarded with a lot more interactive content.
The Siri watch face got some new improvements too with sports scores, maps and heart rate data. This is especially important as Apple plans new smart watch hardware later this year.
Users can now listen to their favourite podcasts on the go with Apple Podcasts on Apple Watch and stream any podcast in the catalogue by using Siri. Third-party apps finally supported on the watch face.
watchOS 5 will be available this fall as a free update for Apple Watch Series 1 and later and requires iPhone 5s or later on iOS 12. watchOS 5 will not be available on the original Apple Watch.
For Activity Sharing competitions, users will be able to invite another Apple Watch wearer to compete in a seven-day activity competition with watchOS 5.
The yoga workout feature primarily tracks the user's heart rate, but the hiking workout is more robust, including metrics for things like elevations and pace. Third-party apps will be able to play background audio, you'll be able to customize the control center, you can add an air quality rating to your watch face, or add your student ID card to the watch. It's now possible to start a fitness competition with other Apple Watch owners, and workout detection automatically determines when various activities start.
Another huge change coming in watchOS 5 is automatic workout tracking.
But that's not all, because you'll be able to add student ID cards to your Apple Watch, and you'll be able to use it anywhere you can use your card.
The iPhone maker is expected to show off the next generations of its iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch operating systems during Monday afternoon's keynote address. WatchOS 5 can handle many of those natively, thanks to Web Kit integration.
Additionally, Apple Watch users will no longer need to say "Hey Siri" to address the digital assistant - and can instead just raise their wrist and begin issuing commands.
