On World Press Day, South Africa ranks third among Africa nations on the media freedom barometer.

The number of journalists killed this year has soared to 44 in 18 countries during the first four months of 2018, up from 28 in the same period last year, the Geneva-based Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) said on Wednesday.

Independent journalism is vital to hold states accountable and to monitor democratic processes.
Article 19 joined with the Committee to Protect Journalists, International Freedom of Expression Exchange, International Press Institute, Index on Censorship and Reporters Without Borders to interview USA journalists. The index, published every year by Reporters without Borders, assesses the level of freedom available to journalists.
"Despite the risks, they stand firm together, determined never to be cowed by terrorists", he said in the statement. "These costs include reducing access to a diversity of original journalism, promoting unreliable content and echo chambers, and intrusively collecting personal data; and for publishers, digital platforms are undermining our efforts to develop new advertising and subscription models and preventing us from competing on the merits", Miller said.
"World Press Freedom Day reminds me and my colleagues of the importance of reporting - reporting for a vibrant democracy and serving people with the information they need and they want", Parwiz Kawa, editor-in-chief of the Hasht-e-Subh Daily newspaper, told AFP.
