Ohtani played catch before Sunday's game, and Scioscia said he was available to pinch hit in 2-1 loss to NY on Sunday night.

"I think he's doing something very special", Tanaka said of the two-way Ohtani, per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

If Ohtani ends up throwing a bullpen session Monday and is able to do so without any issues, the Angels are entertaining the idea of having him start Wednesday against the Orioles. Ohtani will likely be in the lineup against Baltimore.

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced that Shohei Ohtani, who is now nursing an ankle injury he suffered running to first base as a hitter Friday, won't pitch until the weekend when the club travels to Seattle.

Those numbers were very similar to his last start against the Angels, when he allowed one earned run and three hits over 6 2/3 innings of a 5-3 win at Angel Stadium on June 12 of last season.

Ohtani grounded out to second in the fifth inning, then was pinch hit for by Luis Valbuena in the seventh inning, when the Angels announced the injury.

He joined Wes Ferrell (1935), Don Drysdale (1959) and Fergie Jenkins (1971).

"His status is still day to day", Scioscia said, "which means right now, we're not considering the DL".

He is next scheduled to pitch on Tuesday.
