North and South Agree agree to hold summit on April 27
The meeting followed a sudden period of inter-Korean warmth over February's Winter Olympics in the South, to which the North sent hundreds of officials, including Kim's sister who met with Moon to convey her brother's desire for a summit. Just $5 a month. Thursday's meeting was held to determine the date and other issues. There would be no diplomatic track to speak of with North Korea were it not for the efforts of President Moon, and Trump repays him with a very public threat of extortion.
Panmunjom is a "truce village" that sits within a demilitarized area separating the two Koreas.
The two countries will hold the first inter-Korean summit since 2007 on April 27, South Korean government officials announced after holding high-level talks with their North Korean counterparts. South Korean officials have said the meeting would take place by the end of May, after a North-South summit in April.
Seoul's Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said officials from both Koreas exchanged opinions on the agendas of the summit but Cho didn't provide a clear answer on whether Thursday's discussions included the nuclear issue.
Officials from Pyongyang and Seoul agreed that the talks of their leaders will be held at the Casa de la Paz located in that border village, where bilateral contacts have been developed since the beginning of this year.
"I may hold it up until after a deal is made with North Korea", Trump said in a speech.
US President Donald Trump warned Thursday that he may delay implementation of a renegotiated trade deal with South Korea until after planned nuclear talks with North Korea.
"We're moving along very nicely with North Korea".
A date has been set for the summit between Korean leaders Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in.
It also lifted the threat of a 25 percent USA tariff on South Korean steel in exchange for quotas that will cut imports of Korean steel by about 30 percent.
"We still have a fair number of issues to resolve on a working level for preparations over the next month", said Ri Son Gwon, the chairman of North Korea's committee for the peaceful reunification of the country in closing remarks to the South Korean delegation. Moon's spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom in a statement on Thursday called it an encouraging sign that Kim expressed firm willingness for dialogue with South Korea and the United States during his visit to Beijing.
U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to a crowd gathered at the Local 18 Richfield Facility of the Operating Engineers Apprentice and Training, a union and apprentice training center specializing in the fix and operation of heavy equipment on March 29, 2018 in Richfield, Ohio. "They import a lot of Chinese steel and export a lot of steel to the United States". It is even worse when we remember that this is the ally that has gone out of its way to do the diplomatic work that the USA could not or would not do. The Geneva Agreement in 1994, Joint Statement of the Fourth Round of the Six-Party Talks on September 19, 2005, and the "Leap Day" Agreement in 2012 are just some of the results of past U.S. -DPRK negotiations which later turned out to be failed attempts for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. However, the North has yet to officially confirm its interest in a summit between Kim and Trump.
A source at South Korea's trade ministry said the government is "trying to figure out the intention" of Trump "through various channels".
