Wachholz said most recycling doesn't separate different plastics from each other, which makes the process less efficient. Marion discussed how getting involved in Earth Day is a great way to get people thinking about their role on the planet every day.
Wachholz said if consumption was reduced that would make it economically viable to look at establishing more effective collection-sorting-recycling processes that focus on individual plastics rather than grouping them all together.
Three senators have joined the global call against the use of plastic. Over the next few weeks, communities across the state are holding events in support of Earth Day. Visit the Pokémon Go website to see a list of local meetups happening across the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.
Meanwhile, the 3rd Annual Citywide Earth Day LA will take over the Highland Park Recreation Center (6150 Piedmont Ave., Highland Park) from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday. Another rumour suggests Julian Koenig, one of the organisers, chose the date because 22 April is the day of his birthday and birthday rhymes with Earth Day. Air pollution and acid rain were foremost concerns at the first declared Earth Day - April 22, 1970 - and inspired an estimated 20 million American citizens to participate in peaceful street marches, teach-ins and community gatherings across the country.
As humans, we collectively produce almost 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use, and 8 million tons of which is dumped into the ocean yearly.
