Those emails, they said, indicated that Cohen was "performing little to no legal work, and that zero emails were exchanged with President Trump".
The document was filed publicly after lawyers for Cohen appeared before U.S. District Judge Kimba M. Wood to ask that they, not Department of Justice lawyers, be given the first crack at reviewing the seized evidence to see whether it was relevant to the investigation or could be forwarded to criminal investigators without jeopardizing attorney-client privilege.
Cohen wasn't present for the hearing.
The FBI was also seeking potential evidence of Cohen attempting to "suppress" any information about the president before the 2016 election, according to the Times.
The White House has consistently said Trump denies either affair.
Agents conducting the Monday morning raid on Cohen's hotel room, home and office were reportedly seeking documents related to payments made to two women - adult-film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal - who have said they had affairs with Trump more than a decade ago.
Prosecutors are interested in whether Cohen, who had no official role in the 2016 campaign, co-ordinated with it to quash the release of anything detrimental to it and whether that violated campaign finance laws - a new front in the investigation into Cohen. It is unclear what role, if any, Cohen played in the "Access Hollywood" recording.
Lawyers for both Cohen and the president told a NY federal judge that the material is protected under attorney- client privilege. In that recording, Trump can be heard boasting about kissing and groping women without their permission.
"When you're a star, they let you do it", Trump says in the video, speaking to "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush. It was previously reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation took information related to Cohen's payment to Daniels, but this is the first indication that there may be recordings related to the nondisclosure agreements with Daniels and McDougal.
The recording was an outtake from a segment that the entertainment-news program shot in 2005 when Trump had a cameo on "Days of Our Lives".
