Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden
The former world No.1, who hasn't won a tournament in almost two years, is left battling for the minor money after slipping to three-under, 11 shots behind Pernilla Lindberg. The first major championship of the year, which at one point looked like it might be a two-person runaway, now goes to Sunday with one of the more fascinating leaderboards in recent major memory.
Amy Olson, the LPGA Tour's only certified public accountant, was second after a 68.
Ayako Uehara (70) was 9 under, and top-ranked Shanshan Feng (67) and Jessica Korda (73) were another stroke back.
Inbee Park of South Korea (67), the 2013 champion, American Jennifer Song (68) and Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand (66) are also handily-placed on 10 under.
Sweden's Pernilla Lindberg closed with back-to-back birdies to grab the first-round lead at the ANA Inspiration with a seven-under par 65. Thitikul has shot two straight rounds of 71. She made bombs from all over the place, including 20-foot par-savers on Nos. She was the runner-up in last year's U.S. Amateur and Ladies European Championship.
"I was hoping [the ball would go in]", Thompson said after a day when she could find no rhythm on the greens.
"There were a bunch of fairways that I couldn't miss, so that was something that I am disappointed in, my shots today", Park said.
With three consecutive birdies, Park took a two-shot lead to the 12th hole, looking as if she was going to start running away from everybody. She holed a 20-footer for birdie at the 14th to regain sole possession of the lead.
"I haven't let myself get frustrated that I haven't yet had the success that I wanted", said the 31-year-old. No matter what happens on Sunday, it has already been a week for the memory books. I love coming here, and the course can't be in any better shape. Stackhouse said mentorship from fellow Stanford alumni and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had helped her make the leap from college, where she was a four-time All-American, to the professional ranks. They were then put on the clock for slow play, and Park dropped five strokes in the next five holes.
She was always playing catchup after shooting a double-bogey six on the third hole at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
"Today was definitely a much better putting day than the last two days", said Inbee Park, who recorded 25 putts on Saturday. Chief among them is seven-time major victor Inbee Park, who shot 67 on Saturday and putted like a legend.
They approach golf "more like a game", she said. "I just felt really good about my driver". "I've played a lot of golf in my life, and I just feel like the pieces are kind of falling together".
After Friday's round, Lindberg, her fiance'-caddie Danny and her parents took a gondola ride to the 10,800-foot mark in the mountains, where the temperature is 60 degrees below the 97-degree heat of the desert.
