When reached for a comment on Friday, a Facebook spokesperson conceded the company was too slow in responding to reports about the incendiary messages. But waiting until it was confronted with evidence of the deletions and public backlash shows Facebook is only being transparent with users when forced.

The company is facing a global backlash over the improper data-sharing scandal.

Those measures include preventing third-party access to event information and acting as a gatekeeper to third-party apps that require access to pages and personal information of users. Neither can they opt entirely out of Facebook's data collection.

"Facebook confirmed to us that the data of overall up to 2.7 million Europeans or people in the EU to be more precise may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica", a Commission spokesman told Reuters.

Privacy advocates have always been critical of Facebook's penchant for pushing people to share more and more information, often through pro-sharing default options.

Also, the project was part of Building 8, which is a secretive branch of Facebook.

Facebook deleted all messages that were sent by Zuckerberg or any other top executive from users' inboxes.

Then, the algorithm will combine the information to bring out personal recommendation such as food and lifestyle changes to the patient to improve his/her cardiovascular health.

He is to appear before a United States congressional panel next week to address privacy issues. "No data has been shared between any parties".

It does so by matching medical information, for instance of a middle-aged person, such as the age, medications per day, number of trips to the hospital that particular year, with a person on Facebook of the same age, marital status, number of children and his/her daily social activity.

Neither Zuckerberg nor his company has identified those who carried out the data scraping.

"That's the kind of thing where I think it is clear that people were trying to use our tools in order to incite real harm". It can of course do it, because it can but Facebook's argument behind doing it, isn't all that convincing. Facebook later apologised for the study.

Facebook says this was a violation. "This link gives you the option to permanently delete the account".

"With this in mind, previous year Facebook began discussions with leading medical institutions, including the American College of Cardiology and the Stanford University School of Medicine, to explore whether scientific research using anonymised Facebook data could help the medical community advance our understanding in this area". "We appreciate that progress is an iterative process and that it will require more than this letter for Facebook to fix these issues".

Facebook has taken only tentative steps into the health sector thus far, such as its campaign to promote organ donation through the social network. "Our joint hearing will be a public conversation with the CEO of this powerful and influential company about his vision for addressing problems that have generated significant concern about Facebook's role in our democracy, bad actors using the platform and user privacy".
