They still have to face both Chelsea and runaway league leaders Manchester City as they fight to avoid the drop in their final six games of the season.

Arsenal showed similar form to recent league matches - maintaining much of the possession, but failing to keep possession in the final third, and a woefully inadequate defence.

In the 28th minute, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit back for Arsene Wenger's troops with a toe-poke inside the area following an audacious back-heel by Welbeck, 1-1.

Despite today's scoreline, Arsenal have struggled in the Premier League this year, with the club now occupying 6th spot in the table.

Second half substitute Charlie Austin made an immediate impact as he came off the bench to draw Southampton level on 73 minutes but Welbeck nodded in the victor nine minutes from time.

"We want to win every game, we believe every win makes you stronger, and the team knows that as well".

The late red card for Stephens only compounded the loss - with Mark Hughes unhappy that Jack Wilshere was not also dismissed following the tangle with the Saints defender. The venue of the match is at Emirates Stadium.

Southampton remains three points back of safety.

"I thought there'd be another opportunity to get a goal and get the victor".

Aubameyang left the field for Alexandre Lacazette to a standing ovation while Hughes threw on Austin as a second striker in a change that proved pivotal, the substitute tapping in for swift impact when Cedric centred.

Southampton Playing XI: McCarthy, Cedric, Stephens, Hoedt, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Tadic, Long. Subs: Sims 6, Austin 7.

However, while admitting the rivalry with the Frenchman did "get a little bit silly" in the past, Hughes is still full of praise for the longest-serving manager now in England's top flight.

Welbeck then sent the hosts ahead 10 minutes later with a deflected strike from outside the area that screamed into the top corner, 2-1.

81' GOAL! There he is!

Danny Welbeck had only netted three goals in 21 appearances before today's victory against ailing Southampton.

As such, domestic games have nearly turned into a training ground routine for Arsenal, with all their focus clearly on the Europa League.

'I think there should have been another red - Wilshere should have been sent off, ' he said.
