Mitch McConnell to introduce bill that would remove hemp from controlled substance list

Mitch McConnell Wants Congress to Legalize Hemp

The agency in 2017 issued a statement to the site The Cannabist alerting consumers that it still considered CBD oil to be a Federal I controlled substance that can not legally be produced in the United States.

Sen. McConnell met with business leaders to discuss a variety of topics including new legislation McConnell says he's looking to introduce that would remove hemp from the list of controlled substances. Large-scale hemp cultivation is now illegal in the USA because the DEA classifies the plant as a Schedule I drug. But, hemp has a negligible amount of the high-inducing compound THC.

Hemp is now classified as a controlled substance because of its cousin, marijuana. I think most members of the Senate now understand it's 2 very different plans. There may be some continued discussion of that.

A study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison concluded that hemp production "is not likely to generate sizeable profits" and also noted that worldwide competition would affect the U.S. Most of the hemp for these sales was imported from China and Canada.

"Here in Kentucky, we have built the best Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program in the country and have established a model for how other states can do the same with buy-in from growers, processors, and law enforcement", Commissioner Quarles said.

In this August 2016 photo, researchers at the University of Louisville demonstrate how to plant hemp seeds in their 40-foot by 40-foot plot.

"I will be introducing, when I go back to the Senate a week from Monday, a bipartisan bill in the Senate...the Hemp Farming Act of 2018", Leader McConnell said at the press conference.

McConnell's efforts to increase hemp production may help persuade doubters that he will seek re-election in 2020, which he has said he is doing.

Hemp was selectively bred for a range of consumer and industrial uses and has been grown in the U.S. for centuries. "This represents just one many uses that Kentuckians are finding for this versatile crop". Kings Royal expects to start processing locally grown hemp in late 2018, and ramp up to full capacity by mid-2019.

Over 30 states, including IN during Mike Pence's reign as governor, have passed laws to pilot hemp cultivation IN response to an Obama-era measure that defined hemp as a crop distinct from marijuana. The work of Commissioner Quarles here in Kentucky has become a nationwide example for the right way to cultivate hemp.
