Duke assistant Jeff Capel reportedly will take on tall task at Pittsburgh

Report: Pitt To Hire Duke Assistant Basketball Coach Jeff Capel

"I am honored to be named the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball program", Capel said in a press release.

Mike Krzyzewski certainly has quite the track record of grooming assistants for head coaching jobs (Mike Brey, Tommy Amaker and Steve Wojciechowski all come to mind, and Jeff Capel is back as the No. 2 on Duke's staff after stints leading VCU and Oklahoma). He was sacked in 2011 after Oklahoma went 27-36 over his final two seasons, the program's first back-to-back losing campaigns in more than 40 years, and joined Mike Krzyzewski's coaching staff at Duke, Capel's alma mater. Prior to that, he was head coach at Oklahoma, where he compiled a 96-69 record in five seasons and led the Sooners to the Elite Eight in 2009.

Pittsburgh, which fired Stallings after two disastrous years that included an 0-18 record in ACC play this season, reportedly extended an offer to Rhode Island Coach Dan Hurley, who instead took the top job at CT. Stallings went 16-17 in his first year with the Panthers but finished 8-24 this season and didn't win an ACC game. The former Duke guard was viewed as an obvious candidate to replace the 71-year-old Krzyzewski once the winningest coach in men's Division I history finally hangs up his clip board. "His insight, passion for the game, relationships with our players, and most importantly, his friendship have meant the world to me and my family".

Capel is given credit for Duke's recent successful recruiting of "one and done" players, after Krzyzewski lamented the movement and dismissed the idea of having players like that at the school.

Duke can't be pleased with losing one of its top recruiters, but the Blue Devils can find a silver lining in Capel's departure. The Rams qualified for the NCAA tournament in his second season.

But Capel's experience in Norman could serve him well in Pittsburgh, as he inherited a Sooners program saddled with restrictions after major NCAA rules violations by predecessor Kelvin Sampson.

Capel was not implicated in the investigation and found a landing spot at his alma mater. I'm not sure what makes Capel such a solid recruiter but this definitely makes an impact on both Duke and Kentucky's future recruiting.
