Apple Has its Own MicroLED Display Manufacturing Plant

In addition to making their own chips that power the company's smartphones, specific ARM chips in MacBooks for the Touch Bar and the like, Apple is also rumored to be working on ARM chips to power future MacBooks. However, if Apple were to go as far as designing machines to manufacture the displays, as it has done for some other elements of iPhone production, that could allow it to negotiate harder with manufacturers.

MicroLED screens are better than OLED screens because there are slimmer, more energy efficient, and brighter than current technologies as they use a special type of light-emitting LEDs.

The making of own screens by Apple has hurt the suppliers like Samsung Electronics Co., Japan Display Inc., Sharp Corp, and LG Display Co. The LG Display, which was also expected to produce screens for Apple, wiped out 0.89%. Apple is now ordering screens from other companies, as the display for iPhone X is produced by Samsung Displays. Last year, we saw the iPhone X delay a little due to some production issues.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the American tech giant is developing prototype mini displays which could eventually be used in future models of the Apple Watch. However, the screens are significantly brighter than current OLED screens. New information shows that engineers have made a progress with this display technology, but do not be in such a hurry to experience it because it will take a minimum of three years for microLED screens to find themselves on iPhones. We have seen the company move the production of numerous iPhone's components in-house and it's now said to be doing the same for displays as well.

The fact that Apple is interested in MicroLED isn't new; the company acquired MicroLED developer LuxVue in May 2014.

Creating MicroLED screens is extraordinarily complex. The latest MicroLED Apple Watch is not fully functional wearable until the screen portion is connected to an external computer board. According to Bloomberg, several of these suppliers suffered in the Asian markets after Apple's development plans were reported. However, this is the first time Apple is designing screens itself. MicroLEDs comprise millions of discrete pixels, on the basis of screen size.

The manufacturing building has 60,000 square feet and and is the second publicly known lease in Santa Clara by Apple.
