Never mind that the 6-foot-3 Rockhold had a substantial height and reach advantage, Romero wasn't intimidated.

The pair traded vicious leg kicks throughout the first round, with Rockhold bleeding from his shin and Romero walking with a noticeable limp.

Round three began with more of the same, however Romero began pushing the pace more.

Making his UFC debut on commentary, Jimmy Smith noted in the second that Rockhold seemed content at boxing range. Romero carries a lot of muscle weight, however, which could be a factor if this fight lags on. "There was no worry whatsoever in terms of cardio".

"For us, it's never good when fighters miss weight, so I think it sort of takes a bit away from the main event", said Shaw. "I'm glad that the main event fight continued, obviously". "The Soldier of God" was therefore ineligible to win the interim belt. He initially weighed 188 pounds but got down to only 187.7 with a two-hour allotment.

Yoel Romero turns 41 next month, but the former Olympic silver medalist continues to compete at an elite level inside the Octagon. "Some (expletive) as usual".

As impressive as the performance was, it's hard to reward someone with a title fight after missing weight, even considering Romero took the fight on relatively short notice. Unfortunately, he didn't earn the interim title, because he failed to make weight the night before.

Despite tipping the scales heavy, Romero is set to face full-champion Whittaker as confirmed by Dana White who spoke at the post-fight press conference. Romero was fined 30 percent of his purse last weekend, a substantial chunk of change. He was recovering from a pulled hamstring, when he suffered a staph infection in his stomach and a bout with chickenpox.

The Cuban said after the fight that he was "pretty sure he broke his leg" from a Rockhold kick in the opening round. Rockhold last fought in September, when he scored a second-round TKO over David Branch.

After beating Michael Bisping to claim UFC gold in the 185lbs division, the Canadian superstar shortly vacated the title with UFC promoting Whittaker to undisputed status, scheduling him against Luke Rockhold.
