"A series of high-precision weapons strikes has been delivered on the area controlled by the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist group, from which a MANPADS missile was launched at the Russian Su-25 jet", the ministry said adding that "according to radio intercepts, more than 30 Jabhat al-Nusra militants were killed".

Syrians in rebel-held areas say they can distinguish between Russian warplanes and those of the Syrian air force, because the Russian planes fly at higher altitude.

The Sukhoi-25 is a close-support ground-attack aircraft. One of the armed men shouts: "He is Russian".

"On 3 February 2018, a Russian fighter jet Su-25 crashed when flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone".

Russian Federation is a key ally of President Bashar Assad, and has been waging a military campaign on behalf of his forces since 2015.

Two rebel sources said the pilot was badly injured after escaping the crash by parachute.

On November 19, the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group was flushed out of its last stronghold in Syria's Al-Bukamal.

It is not yet known which group shot the plane down. "This plane was also carrying out raids there".

The downing of the aircraft is a rare instance of a Russian jet being shot down by rebels.

Russian Federation has been conducting military operations in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since September 2015.

In 2016, Turkey downed a Russian fighter plane which Ankara claimed had encroached in its airspace, causing the relations between the countries to dip to their worst point since the Cold War. It said it was making all possible efforts to retrieve the body.

The army confirmed new gains on Saturday, saying it had seized a string of villages from al Qaeda fighters, state television said, quoting a military source.
