Officer shot and killed north of Denver; suspect at large
22-year-old Dreion Martise Dearing is being held in the Adams County jail on a charge of first degree murder and 2 counts of first degree murder of a peace officer following the shooting of 31-year-old Deputy Heath Gumm on Wednesday night. "Not one, but two deputies down in less than a month.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff's Office and the family and friends of the deputy killed", Hickenlooper added.
The Colorado Police Officers Foundation identified the slain deputy early Thursday morning as Heath Gumm, 32. Once on scene the deputies found that the suspect had fled.
Law enforcement agencies continued to hunt Thursday morning for two suspects in the shooting death of an Adams County Deputy at about 7 p.m. January 24.
An active scene began developing after shots were fired in the area of 88th and Dawson St.
The deputy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hundreds of officers reportedly showed up, driving in a silent procession and flashing their police lights, according to CBS News. "They told us to immediately shelter in place".
Other law enforcement agencies also tweeted condolences for deputy who was shot while performing his duty. Civilians, including some of the homeless people sleep under nearby underpasses, have gathered to watch. We'll share confirmed updates here as soon as we get them.
Investigators set a large perimeter in their search for two other suspects.
On Thursday police were conducting an extensive search for two other suspects in the case.
Citing the needs of an ongoing investigation, police advised local residents to exercise caution and take precautionary measures such as staying away from windows or avoiding certain parts of the city. Officers walking around with rifles drawn.
