Amazon acquires security camera and doorbell maker Blink
January 22 2018, 02:08 | Alonzo Simpson
Amazon buys Nest rival Blink amid Google beef
Unlike rival systems that require a wired power connection, or the few battery-powered cameras already on the market which generally had relatively short battery life, Blink's promised more than a year of home monitoring from a single charge.
Blink, founded in 2014 via a successful $1 million crowdfunding campaign, makes low-priced video doorbells and security cameras for indoor and outdoor use. Blink's cameras and doorbell instead operate on simple AA batteries that can last upwards of a year for the average user.
Whether or not Amazon plans to integrate Blink's technology into its delivery service or just have it under as an Amazon subsidiary, Blink will see significant growth under Amazon. Blink announced the acquisition in a brief blog post on its website, and no financial terms were disclosed.
As one of [Blink's] distributors, we already know customers love their home security cameras and monitoring systems.
It stands to reason that we'll see even more smart home devices, especially in the surveillance segment, coming from the company soon enough.
Blink says that you won't have to worry about any changes with regards to support. The Cloud Cam is not Amazon's first shot at a camera, as it has added cameras to Echo devices like the Echo Look and Echo Show.
For Blink customers, changes doesn't seem to be coming immediately. We're excited to welcome their team and invent together on behalf of customers.
