A statement has been issued on his Instagram profile, from his lawyers, denying he was involved.

According to a report by Sky Sports, the 33-year-old star is now in Brazil, playing for Atletico Mineiro.

The complex nature of the Italian judicial system means that there are various appeal processes available to Robinho and his legal team so it may take a while before any sentence is carried through.

It said: "On the news involving striker Robinho, in fact that happened a few years ago, we clarified that he already defended himself against the charges, saying he had no participation in the episode".

Former Manchester City forward Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in jail for sexual assault. However, Brazil does not allow for the extradition of its own citizens, meaning he would only risk arrest and deportation if he was stopped in a third country.

It added: "All legal steps are now being taken with regards to this decision by a court of first instance". Robinho joined Atletico Mineiro from Guangzhou Evergrande past year.

His performances won him a move to Real Madrid in 2005 but he stayed only three years before moving to City in a British-record £32.5m transfer.
