A top commander was among six foreign militants of Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) killed while one Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud martyred and a soldier injured in a fierce encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, where protests erupted on Saturdayafternoon.

The officers involved in the operation had first surrounded Chandergeer village in Bandipora districts Hajin area, following specific information about the presence of terrorists there.

"As the search approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter", they said. Six weapons were also recovered from the encounter site.

With the killing of six Lashkar militants, who are all Pakistanis according to police and army officials, the outfit's leadership is over northern districts of Kashmir.

Earlier Saturday, thousands of residents in Kashmir's main city of Srinagar participated in the funeral of a local militant who police said was killed overnight in a shootout with troops. Sources said the group had killed a border security force trooper in the region. In 2007, Lakhvi's 20-year-old son Mohammad Qasim was killed in an encounter with the army and J&K police. "Mehmood took over when Musaib (another close relative of Lakhvi) was killed by the forces in Hajin in January", he said.

Apart from featuring in the National Investigating Agency (NIA)'s most wanted list, Lakhvi is also among the 3 globally prosecuted terrorists named by India and the European Union in their joint statement to combat terrorism.
