Juan Martin del Potro booked his place in the second round of the Basel Open on Wednesday
Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro both eased into the Swiss Indoors quarterfinals by beating French opponents in straight sets on Thursday.
Federer is seeking his seventh title of 2017, a year in which he won an unprecedented eighth men's singles title at Wimbledon to increase his record Grand Slam championship haul to 19.
But he pulled out some brilliant play late in the piece, including an incredible pick-up off Mannarino's return.
The Swiss veteran fired 12 aces and advanced to a semi-final against the victor from American Jack Sock and third seed David Goffin.
The top-seeded Swiss had to save two break points when trailing 3-2 in the decisive set.
In the third set, the Swiss top seed saved break points in the sixth game for 3-3 before breaking for a 4-3 lead with a backhand victor.
If Pablo Carreno Busta loses his second-round match in Vienna on Friday against Del Potro's fellow Argentine Diego Schwartzman, the South American would move into the eighth and final qualifying spot for the year-end tournament. "I'm exhausted, but I'm still winning and playing good tennis", the world number 19 said. "I've been playing a lot of matches".
Fourth-seeded Del Potro needed exactly two hours to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 against sixth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.
"I played better than yesterday, but tomorrow I need to improve a little bit more".
"I will be ready for Saturday, it will be a challenge for me, I'm glad to reach the semi-finals of this event again".
He next faces Julien Benneteau of France, who saw off American Donald Young 6-4, 6-2.
