"Today, Serbia considers Turkey as its friend".

Turkey is calling for a normalization of relations with the United States following rising diplomatic tensions between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

"I use this opportunity to once again invite Turkish businesspeople to come and invest in Serbia now, especially when Halkbank is operating there", he said, referring to Turkey's large, state-owned bank.

"It has huge importance and potential in the context of the continuation of the political dialogue at the highest level between our two countries as well as strengthening political, economic, cultural and overall dialogue and ties", Danilo Vucetic said of the visit, set to start yesterday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is continuing a visit to Serbia with a visit to Sandzak, a mainly Muslim-populated region.

"In order to minimise the number of visitors to our diplomatic and consular missions in the USA while this assessment proceeds, effective immediately we have suspended all visa services regarding the United States citizens at our diplomatic and consular missions", it added. Bass is due to leave Turkey later this week for a new assignment in Afghanistan.

Some Turkish officials have long alleged a USA hand in the coup attempt on July 15 previous year, which Ankara blames on the US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen.

Total trade between Serbia and Turkey should reach $1.2 billion (1 billion euro) in 2017, RTS quoted Erdogan as saying during a business forum in Belgrade organised within the framework of his official visit to Serbia. Gulen denies any involvement.
