Irving went on to confirm that he did not talk to James before making his trade demand in July and acknowledged that James may have taken that personally (as Smith has reported - and as James has denied -in the past). During the show, Smith asked: "Are you prepared to deal with - unintentional or not - are you prepared to deal with the distraction that you are going to be just because you're that good and you made a decision to leave Cleveland and you ended up in Boston?"
Smith asked Irving if he believed he could win, presumably a championship, without James. I'm not here to go at any particular person or the organization because I have nothing but love for Cleveland.
After remaining mostly mum regarding his trade, Irving suggested he wanted a bigger spotlight and that he was unconcerned about James' feelings.
"So why was it time to make the move?", Qerim asked Irving at the beginning of the interview. I have nothing but love for the time I spent there.
"Like I said, I was very patient within those moments, because I knew the importance wasn't in my ego", Irving said, while adding he did ask himself if the Cavaliers were right for him. And there is no looking back from that standpoint. I was like, I want to be extremely, extremely happy, like, in perfecting my craft. "That was the only intent I have in all of this". Speculation and rumors ensued until a month later Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas and other players and picks. The two teams will play each other on the NBA's opening night on October 17.
