Powerball jackpot rises to whopping $700 million

Powerball numbers were drawn for a possibility at 535 million dollars big stake

People seem undeterred by the approximately one in 292 million odds of winning.

COEUR d'ALENE — Eugene Stanton has lottery fever, and that feels like $700 million.

States, not necessarily players, are reaping the rewards of the sales surge. The largest Powerball prize Pennsylvania has ever awarded was an $110.2 million cash-value jackpot claimed by a New Jersey couple in May 2004.

Given its location near several hotels, he explained his store often attracts out of towners, especially from states like Alabama where there is no lottery.

"We've seen people put down $100 for Powerball tickets", said Angela Baylor, who mans one of the lottery machines. "That's my main objective".

McIntyre also said luck can strike anywhere.

The largest Powerball jackpot was $1.586 billion in January 2016.

In Powerball, organizers draw five white balls from a drum of 69 and one red ball - the "powerball" - from a drum of 26.

A new drawing of winning numbers that could make a lucky player fabulously wealthy will be tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 10:59 p.m.

The last time there was a Powerball jackpot victor was June 10 with a single ticket worth $447.8 million that was sold in California.

"The one I like is, if they win, they'll come in to give me a tip afterward", he said.

According to the Kentucky Lottery Corp., 40 cents of every dollar in Powerball sales goes back to the Commonwealth to finance college scholarship and grant programs. The corporation reports it has returned over $18.7 billion in education funds since it started selling tickets in 1993.

It is hard to not think about what you would do if you did get the Powerball.

Garcia is enrolled at Empire Beauty School and plans to finish school even if she wins.

Bryant Bowdry works at SunTrust Park and said he doesn't usually play. He expects the number will be higher today with the increased jackpot. "I'm not sure. I was just saying, I don't normally play". Face it, you're nearly certainly not going to win the jackpot, but players have much better odds of one in 25 of winning a lesser prize. "It just depends on the jackpot", he said.

Playing these numbers do not change your odds.

Each wager is comprised of two sets of numbers. State taxes vary, so the amount winners will pay in depend on where they play.

But the estimated average jackpot grew from $174 million to $310 million, lottery officials said.

Shaheen said they received daily requests from across the country and from all walks of life when they first won.
