Unlike the rest of the evening's performers, Lorde, 20, made a decision to forego singing altogether, not even lip syncing along with her song "Homemade Dynamite".

She's up for artist of the year - which this year will be shared with musicians across all genders - competing against Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd and Ariana Grande.

Her routine included foot stomps, collapsing on the ground, slow motion boxing moves, being carried in the air by back-up dancers dressed in black, and shoulder shrugs.

Earlier, Lorde had told fans on Twitter her knees were "busted up" leading into today's VMAs performance.

It was later revealed that the singer turned up to the event with a awful flu, and it was so bad she needed an IV drip before the show.
