Jared Leto honors Chester Bennington and Linkin Park at the 2017 MTV VMAs

"MTV asked me to come here to say a few words about Chester and the late, great Chris Cornell - two artists that I had the absolute pleasure of touring with". If you're in immediate danger, call 000.

The Linkin Park singer's family is planning to establish a suicide awareness organization in hopes of preventing Chester's fans from taking their own lives - they're trying to make something positive out of his heartbreaking death. He was precocious, full of life and determined and grew up to become the singer of one of the biggest rock bands in the history of music. "When I think about him, Chester, I see his face, which was always smiling". "I think about his heart, which he wore on his sleeve; I think how kindly he treated me, my brother, my band; I think about his wife and his six incredible children". And I remember his voice, at once ferocious and delicate. "That voice will live forever".

Leto also remarked how Bennington had sung at Cornell's funeral service, which took place only a short handful of weeks before Bennington's untimely passing in late July. When no one did, Leto told the audience could wait there all day for them to stand up.

The family is thought to be anxious that "in the wake of two huge rock stars recently committing suicide, fans of theirs might want to glorify or somehow honor their deaths by doing the same" and that suicide may considered as an "appropriate way out". Chester was my friend. "And witnessing his life taught me important things".

Jared also addressed anyone out there who was watching, who might be having a bad time. "Whatever you are going through, however dark it may seem, there is an undeniable truth and strength in the fact that you are not alone".
