The results of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) elections were announced today saw the Bharaitya Janata Party (BJP) secure more seats than Shiv Sena, thereby staking claim on the municipal body.
The voters' turnout, however, was very low with just 47 percent voters exercising their franchise in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation election held on Sunday. It had won 15 seats in the previous polls.While the Congress followed Sena with 10 seats, NCP took the hardest blow with zero seats , As Reported By NDTV.
This year in February, the BJP jumped from 31 seats in 2012 to 82 in the elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Sena won 84. According to IE report, BJP is contesting for 90 seats while four seats have been given to RPI.
The Shiv Sena managed to win 22 seats while the Congress won merely 10 seats. In the municipal elections in nine other cities in February 2017 also, the BJP was the single largest party in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Amravati, Akola, Solapur and Ulhasnagar. This is the second big victory in the municipal polls for the BJP after a thumping win in the Panvel Municipal poll.
Shelar also mocked former BJP ally in the municipal corporation, Shiv Sena, without mentioning the name of the party. The Congress bagged the seat after the returning officer rejected the nominations of BJP and Sena candidates due to caste certificate issues. "Like the Marathas rose after the Panipat loss, Shiv Sena will also rise once again", he said. The party had won 32 seats in the 2012 polls.BJP ally Shiv Sena, which has attacked the former several times in the past, came second with 22 seats.
The BJP-Shiv Sena combine rules the Kalyan civic body, the Sena has an upper hand in Mumbai and Thane.
BJP MP from Mumbai North-East- Kirit Somaiya lashed out at Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena on Twitter.
The term of the BJP-Shiv Sena rule municipal corporation ends on 27 August.
