Auburn narrowly outside top 10 in preseason AP poll

Kentucky received three votes in the preseason AP Top 25 poll released Monday afternoon.

The preseason AP Top 25 poll was released moments ago.

Starting the season ranked in the top 20 is familiar territory for the Georgia football team the past five years.

Southern California, which received two first-place votes, is No. 4.

Jimbo Fisher's Florida State Seminoles will enter the 2017 season ranked No. 3 overall behind Alabama and Ohio State.

Alabama will play FSU on September 2 in Atlanta.

The No. 12 ranking revealed Monday is in line with preseason expectations: Auburn was ranked No. 13 in the preseason coaches poll released August 3 and picked to finish second in the West and overall in a poll conducted at July's SEC Media Days. In fact, the previous three times the Crimson Tide opened the year at No. 1, it finished 10th in 2010, seventh in 2013, and second last season, respectively.

With less than two weeks remaining until a showdown between Florida State and Alabama in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game, it can officially be stated: This is the best opening-weekend game in college football history. The Clemson Tigers, who beat Alabama in last year's title game behind since-departed star quarterback Deshaun Watson, will open the campaign ranked fifth nationally. Not only is it the first taste of football since January for college fans, but it's also a time to talk about the contenders, and pretenders, for the 2017 season.

The Bulldogs are the highest ranked SEC East team, two spots ahead of No. 17 Florida. Other SEC teams in the Poll are Auburn at 12, LSU at 13, Georgia at 15 and Florida 17th. Oklahoma 8. Washington 9.
