Police say Barcelona incident a 'terrorist attack'

Scores of innocent victims were mowed down as a van ploughed down the Spanish city's hugely popular Las Ramblas shortly after 5pm.

Thirteen people were killed and 50 injured after a white van jumped up onto a sidewalk and sped down a pedestrian zone in Barcelona's historic Las Ramblas district Thursday, plowing into tourists and residents.

Catalan police say there's an operation underway to search for the driver and urged people not to get close to the affected area.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported police said the two men were holed up in a bar, according to The Associated Press.

Barcelona police called it a terror attack.

Spanish police have reportedly shot dead one suspect, and arrested another, after 13 people were been killed in a terrorist attack in Barcelona. Police are also asking people in the area of the plaza to stay in place until they are given the OK to leave.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he was in contact with authorities, and the priority was to attend to the injured.

The Clemson Men's Basketball team is in Barcelona, Spain, was not caught up in the terrorist van attack or its aftermath, school officials reported Thursday on Facebook. Earlier, the police force for Spain's Catalonia region said it has arrested a man in the Barcelona van attack and is "treating him as a terrorist".

Mr Anwar said: "I had been to the Cathedral and walking down Las Ramblas for something to eat".

"All of a sudden, I just sort of heard a crashing noise and the whole street just started to run, screaming".

The area is now under lockdown; stores and nearby Metro and train stations have been ordered to close.

He posted a second video seven minutes later showing a large crowd of onlookers being directed away from the scene by officials, saying: "Total panic - we are all getting pushed back".

People just started running screaming, there were loud bangs. It is unclear how many people are trapped inside the restaurant.
