The hospital treating Congressman Steve Scalise for injuries from a gunshot wound said Thursday evening (June 15) he "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

USA lawmakers returned to regular business on Thursday and prepared to play their annual charity baseball game, one day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition.

Like Scalise, Richmond was practicing baseball at another location with Democrat teammates for the Congressional charity game when Hodgkinson opened fire at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. The crowd chanted "USA!"

Suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

Organizers chose to go on with the game on Wednesday, hours after the shooting. Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

The House has returned to business after a gunman fired at a baseball practice, critically injuring a top Republican lawmaker and wounding several others.

U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, was the only Texan who started the game.

Congress is a contentious place, and the battles between Republicans and Democrats have never been more fierce than in the eight years under President Barack Obama and the early days of Trump's presidency.

Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, taken away in a stretcher with an injured ankle from the chaos in Virginia, hobbled around the third-base box Thursday night, coaching the GOP team as planned, with his crutches set aside.

Trump visited the Louisiana congressman at the hospital Wednesday night, and Vice President Mike Pence paid a visit Thursday morning.

In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

LSU officials say the university sent t-shirts, hats, towels, and other items for congressional members to wear for the game to show support for Scalise. Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms". He was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at a Washington hospital, which said he will require several more operations.

Both Republicans and Democrats have pointed to the attack as a reason to ease heated political rhetoric.

Bailey is a member of Congressman Steve Scalise's protective detail.

But Scalise can hope to make an "excellent recovery", his trauma surgeon said Friday. The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added as a beneficiary on Wednesday.

Thursday's match-up represents a tie-breaker in the series.

The game, a charity match between teams of Democrats and Republicans played almost every year since 1909, usually draws about 10,000.

"I think it also talks to how close we get with people here in Washington, on both sides of the aisle".
