British police responded to multiple security incidents across London on Saturday as a van plowed into pedestrians on London Bridge, killing at least one person, and at least one assailant went on a stabbing rampage in an area of the capital known for its pubs and lively nightlife.
Witnesses report a vehicle hitting pedestrians on the London Bridge and injured people on the ground.
Armed police are also responding to reports of stabbings and shots fired at the nearby renowned Borough Market, as well as an incident in the Vauxhall district.
Tony Murphy, who lives near the area, told Sky News he heard the sound of gunfire.
Another married couple who happened to witness the incident on London Bridghe said: "We saw a man in red with quite a large blade, we don't know the measurement, maybe 10 inches".
"A white van driver came speeding - probably about 50mph - veered of the road into the crowds of people who were walking along the pavement", she told BBC News.
Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, said in a tweet: "Tonight's horrific incidents in London remind us how much we owe our emergency services".
According to BBC News, the van was driving at approximately 50 miles per hour and struck more than five people. He said he threw chairs, glasses and bottles at the attackers in a bid to stop them.
Diners at restaurants near the bridge said they were told by police to run.
London's transport authority said London Bridge rail station had been closed at the request of the police. Police said the attacks had been declared terrorist incidents.
Witnesses reported that a white van was travelling fast - about 80km/h - when it mounted the sidewalk and ploughed into a group of people crossing the Thames River on foot.
The force tweeted a warning telling people in the area to run to safety, hide and then call police if it is safe to do so. A witness on the bridge told CNN the van mowed down pedestrians as it sped south across the bridge, leaving bodies lying in the roadway.
On March 22, the British Parliament building was attacked by a man who ran over pedestrians with a auto and then stabbed several people.
It comes a day before Ariana Grande is set to perform in Manchester following a suicide bombing at her concert.
"A man suddenly appeared in the restaurant with a massive knife - some people in the restaurant believe there may have been another man - but it was so chaotic it was hard to tell", the witness said.
Labor senator Sam Dastyari said on social media he was having dinner near the bridge and was evacuated past the scene by police after they placed the restaurant in lockdown.
