- A MI man has been identified as one of the victims who was shot during a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday morning. Our family continues to be in shock and we ask for privacy while we focus on Matt and his care. The family says that Mika has been alert, conscious, and has been able to communicate through notes.
Matt Mika, a director of government relations for the company's Washington, DC, office was wounded when a gunman opened fire at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, a spokesperson told ABC News in a statement. The hospital confirmed to TIME that one victim from the shooting remains in critical condition. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Francis Brooke, a member of the vice president's staff and a coach on the GOP baseball team who was present at the site of the shooting.
"Baseball is one of his great passions and he has always loved the Congressional team", his family said in a statement. "He's a great guy".
Mika is a former aide to Michigan Republican Rep. Tim Walberg.
His family also mentioned in their statement that Mika had once served on the staff of Michigan State Representative David Palsrok.
