Historically the game brings an intense political rivalry onto the baseball field and this year will be no different.

"And as I was getting into the auto with one of my colleagues ... there was a guy that walked up to us that was asking whether there was Republicans or Democrats out there", he said during the interview.

After accepting it gracefully, Mr Barton cracked: "Next year we won't be so nice".

Pelosi said at a news conference she believes the 2,200-member Capitol Police force needed a bigger budget.

Family members of another victim of the shooting, Matt Mika, say the MI native was also shot multiple times in his chest and arm, and he remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital.

Scalise was shot in the hip, with the bullet tearing through his pelvis and injuring internal organs. The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

"By playing tonight you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults", Trump said. It was his 11th time suiting up for the game, but he says this game was different.

"It's another reminder that we need to be prepared and we need to stay vigilant and always alert and aware of our surroundings", he said.

But despite the unifying nature of the event, there were boos for the president, too, from the section for Democratic fans on the third base side.

Earlier Thursday, Republican lawmakers met behind closed doors to share reflections and pray.

He confessed later that "the fear factor was horrific".

Williams, a Republican coach who injured his leg and ankle while diving for cover during the shooting, also said it was important to play ball as planned. At least one aide was shot in the chest.

In the history of the contest, Republicans and Democrats each have won 39 games with one tie. Democrats sent the trophy they earned to Scalise's office after the game.

Still, the divide was good-natured for once.

And as lawmakers discussed increasing security, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged them to come together following in the incident.

The highlight of the game was heroic Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the game's first pitch.

Democratic members of Congress, some of whom also had baseball practice on Wednesday, held a group prayer for their colleagues.

The proceeds from the $10 tickets will be donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center and National Dreams Foundation.

"The members of Congress, the staff and the volunteers who were out at practice this morning care deeply about the causes they play to benefit", game organizers said in a statement released Wednesday.

The crowd was a mix of Democrats and Republicans.
