Four held in east London over alleged United Kingdom terror plot

Four men arrested in east London over UK plot to launch terror attack

British police say they have arrested four young men in London on suspicion of plotting terrorist acts in the United Kingdom.

The suspects are in custody at a south London police station. The arrests came as a part of an ongoing investigation by the Metropolitan Police and the MI5 intelligence agency.

The others, aged 27, 25 and 18, were arrested at their home addresses.

The operation followed heightened activity by counter-terrorism investigators that led to the thwarting of two alleged plots last month in London.

In an unconnected case that emerged on the same day, three women have been charged with preparation of a terrorist act and conspiracy to murder following a police raid in Willesden that saw one of the women shot.

The arrests were made as part of an investigation by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command and MI5.

The current terror threat level in the United Kingdom is severe, the second highest, which means an attack is highly likely.

A 24-year-old man was arrested nearby.

In March, a man killed five people after driving into a crowd of pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in central London before stabbing a police officer in the grounds of parliament.
