"Overall, the Shoals is going to fare much better than everybody else, but you're not totally out of the woods", weather service meteorologist Chelly Amin said.

Another severe weather event is also possible mainly after midnight as a squall line precedes the cold front.

The National Weather Service is calling for thunderstorms, high winds, hail and possible tornadoes Wednesday.

The worst weather could stretch from Alabama to SC. Tornadoes (some of which could be long-lived) and damaging straight-line wind seem to be the greatest threats.

"This could be a very unsafe situation today as a widespread severe weather outbreak is expected to develop with long-track and strong tornadoes, damaging wind and very large hail", James said through the release.

A cold front will move through the area during the late afternoon through early evening, bringing with it a high threat of severe weather, including the possibility of damaging hail, strong winds and tornadoes.

Additional severe thunderstorm or tornado watches are likely to be issued for parts of our area today, and warnings will go into effect when severe storm elements are detected.

Earlier Wednesday, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport temporarily halted flights in the morning, but operations resumed by 1:30 p.m.

Isolated tornadoes also are possible in the strongest storms. "Summing up, Monday was a widespread rain story, tonight is a severe threat story". Aside from the severe threat, winds will be strong outside of any thunderstorms and gust to 30 miles per hour.

Additionally, a flash flood watch, meaning that weather conditions may lead to flooding, is in effect for the area from 8 a.m. Wednesday through 2 a.m. Thursday. Download the Storm Shield Weather Radio App for your iPhone or Android device and get severe weather alerts wherever you are. Winds will pick up by late morning with temperatures well above average in the mid 70's to lower 80's.
