US Pacific Command said it detected and tracked a North Korean missile launch at 11:42 a.m. Hawaii time April 4, according to a statement.

The meeting comes at a time when fears about North Korea's nuclear program are growing.

That sentiment echoes the President himself, who told the Financial Times in an interview that he was prepared to act to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions with or without China.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is talking in more urgent terms about North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons, as President Donald Trump's talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping approach.

"Any commentary on how the U.S. specifically wants to try to reduce the trade deficit with China will be watched by FX investors", the strategists wrote.

"It seems Tillerson purposefully issued a short statement to send a tough signal", said Kim Sung-han, a professor at Seoul's Korea University and a former South Korean deputy foreign minister.

South Korea says North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the waters off its east coast.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry called the North's latest missile launch a "reckless provocation" that posed a threat to worldwide peace, while Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the country lodged a strong protest over the launch. While some analysts expect the two sides to keep friction to a minimum by sticking to an agreed-upon script, others worry Trump's past harsh criticism of China and mounting dissatisfaction with Beijing in American business circles auger ill for the summit.

"What Trump is trying to do is set the bar high", Kazianis said.

Tillerson didn't have much to say about Wednesday's launch, remarking that "the United States has spoken enough about North Korea".

Referring to Trump's and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley's recent remarks, he added the Trump administration "is clearly showing it is putting resolving the North Korea nuclear issue as top priority". "China bilateral relationship.President Trump really views this meeting as a first step toward building a constructive and a results-oriented relationship that's going to deliver benefits to both countries". -China summit in Florida, Trump had threatened to use crucial trade ties with China to pressure Beijing into more action on North Korea.

Tillerson's message was for China, and Xi Jinping as he comes to the USA this week on his first state visit with the new administration.

"China will continue to work with the United States to think creatively and keeping pushing for greater balance in China-US trade", Zheng said.

"North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile. Now, what I would do is I would make China respect us because China has extreme control over North Korea". Then, the USA was threatening sanctions unless China stopped commercial cyberthefts. He didn't elaborate, but his administration is looking at sanctions against Chinese banks and companies that provide North Korea access to the global financial system, a move strongly backed by Congress.

Yet even if Xi is able to offer Trump deliverables, he will still have to deal with "a restless USA president valuing unpredictability and seeking advantage for his agenda going forward", Sutter said.

He condemned the launch and pledged to "file a grave protest against North Korea". "You have to do something about North Korea".

Just days before the meetings, a bipartisan group of 26 USA senators sent a joint letter urging Trump to use the summit with Xi to bring an end to Beijing's retaliatory measures in an attempt to pressure Seoul to scrap the decision to have a THAAD battery. "I'm a military officer, not a State Department official or any economic expert".
