Leafs goalie Andersen out Sunday in key game

Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy talks to his players during the third period of their 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals in an NHL hockey game in Boston Saturday

The Toronto Maple Leafs are going back to the playoffs.

And they showed it on Saturday in their 5-3 win over the Penguins, as the Maple Leafs have claimed the last open playoff spot.

We've known for awhile now that these Maple Leafs aren't the ones of years past. The organization has been dramatically overhauled since with Brendan Shanahan taking over as president, Mike Babcock as head coach and Lou Lamoriello as general manager. We've got lots of energy.

"If I'm really honest, maybe not", Komarov said. "We're going to find out that it's way different than regular-season hockey". Then the Blue Jackets took at 3-2 lead on Cam Atkinson's 35th goal of the season, and that ended up as the final score. Toronto of those days was built tenuously around veterans like Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf, ultimately unravelling in Game 7 of a first-round series against Boston. It's possible the series will start on Thursday in Washington, with Game 2 on Saturday at the Verizon Center. I think that's why we're having success. we're so excited, these are must wins for our team. We have room to breathe, but not too much. Easy is for other teams and fan bases. "We still have business to take care of, but it's a big night for us to clinch".

Andersen left Saturday's game against the Penguins in the second period due to a head injury.

"It's tough", McElhinney said of Andersen. "It was just important for me to get that low coverage". On Sunday morning, however, Babcock said that while Andersen was not exhibiting concussion symptoms, he would not dress for the game. On the Atlantic side, the division champion Montreal Canadiens face the wild-card New York Rangers, and the Ottawa Senators have home ice against the Boston Bruins. So I think we're motivated just making sure we play the right way going into the playoffs. It also marked a turning point in Holtby's season.

"A lot of those games (in the past month) were tight", Babcock said.

It wasn't the smoothest effort that got them into the postseason.

Brown got the victor when he tipped a Jake Gardiner shot past Marc-Andre Fleury, with Nazem Kadri screening the goalie. If they don't win both games, they can't pass the Leafs who have 93 now and are in the final spot. "They're a risky team".

After Phil Kessel scored the 1-0 goal in the first period, "the kid traded for Kessel" - Kasperi Kapanen - answered with the 3-3 tally in the third, his first career National Hockey League goal (and what a pass by Matt Hunwick!).

We all know the David vs. Goliath story.

Later in the period, Fleury stopped van Riemsdyk on a breakaway and again on a wraparound attempt. William Nylander rang a shot off the post. He finished with a goal and five shots. The teams exchanged power-play goals early in the second period.

Sestito drew a penalty for goalie interference on the play, Bozak proceeding to put the Leafs ahead with the power play. It was Bozak's 18th goal of the season. Porter was in the lineup on Saturday and Jarry backed up G Marc-Andre Fleury. D John Carlson will miss the Capitals' game at Boston on Saturday with a lower-body injury. Forwards Nick Bonino, Bryan Rust and Patric Hornqvist got the night off.

Columbus Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson, centre left, celebrates after scoring against the Toronto Maple Leafs during second period NHL hockey action in Toronto, on Sunday, April 9, 2017.
