Cowboys' Romo retiring, headed to broadcast booth

January 19 2018, 05:40 | Van Peters

Multiple reports earlier Tuesday indicated that Romo will be released by the Cowboys on Tuesday and that he would jump to a television network.

Ourand reports Romo and CBS have "a verbal agreement" but no deal is in place yet.

However, within hours, the Texans traded Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys pulled the brakes on their intentions to cut their quarterback of over ten years. Some Cowboys fans will always love Romo for the good humor he showed during his time with the team, others will never forgive him for going to Mexico with Jessica Simpson the week before the 2007 playoffs began.

The Broncos went 9-7 last season after a 4-0 start and finished third in the AFC West, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Fox Sports wanted Romo to replace John Lynch as the game analyst on the net's No. 2 broadcast team.

From 2006-15, Romo completed 65 percent of his passes and averaged 8.4 yards per attempt in the fourth quarter, which is the best of any of the 36 passers with 500 action plays in the fourth quarter in that span. And Romo's career regular season win/loss total of 78-49 proves he's a victor.

"Tony has been one of the NFL's biggest stars for the past decade; and we are thrilled to welcome him to CBS Sports", said CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus.

Romo had two back surgeries in 2013 and suffered two transverse process fractures in 2014. He's played in five games overall over the past two seasons. Thanks to previous contract restructuring, Romo will count nearly $11 million on the Cowboys 2018 cap, before going off the books in 2019.

Dak Prescott now has the Cowboys job all on his own coming off a Rookie of the Year performance that helped Dallas to the NFC East title and a 13-3 record last season.

The Patriots however went on to win the Super Bowl, something that Prescott and the Cowboys did not manage this year, losing their NFL Divisional matchup against the Green Bay packers after earning a first-round bye.

In 2016, Romo was sidelined in August by a fractured vertebrae and only played one series - at Philadelphia in the regular season finale - all season. It is why he has a strained relationship with Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, who ultimately made the decision to take his job away and give it to Prescott.
