Mount St. Mary's close win during the opening night of the NCAA Tournament is great for the small school. At that level the Mountaineers reached the Final Four in 1957, 1962, 1962 (champions), 1981 and 1985.
Villanova guard Donte DiVincenzo grabs a rebound next two Mount St. Mary's forward Chris Wray during the second half.
Top-seeded Villanova (31-3, 15-3 Big East) will officially begin its title defense on Thursday night against 16-seed and First Four victor Mount St. Mary's (20-15, 14-4 NEC). Their non-conference schedule this season was impressive as they matched up with NCAA Tournament teams like West Virginia, Minnesota, Michigan and Arkansas (lost to them all).
"We started the engine on the vehicle, now the auto is moving", Frye said.
"We're super excited that we've actually gone this far", says UNO student Bala Mangia.
The 2017 NCAA Tournament has arrived, and for the next four days, the first and second rounds of the Men's Division I NCAA Tournament will dominate the sports world, bringing many together to see which brackets will be busted on the first weekend. Villanova shook its one-or-two-and-down reputation with the school's first title since the near miraculous one in 1985, when coach Rollie Massimino's crew dropped mighty Georgetown.
The game featured teams of contrasting styles.
Mountaineers head coach Jamion Christian was in awe of his star guard: "The way he plays out there - his speed, his athleticism - it's just so special", the fifth-year head man said.
This year, the NCAA will award conferences more than $1.5 million per game - that money gets paid out over six years in installments of about $260,800.
Long, who only attempted seven shots from the field, deferred to his teammates when the shots weren't falling. The Mountaineers led by as many as 11 points in the first half. But Jenkins, who is averaging 13.4 points this season, can do more than just shoot as he's averaging 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
Wesley Iwundu added 24 points, and D.J. Johnson scored 18 for K-State. We didn't ball pressure well to the second half.
He and Eric Paschall (4-4 FG) combined for 29 points on 13-19 shooting from the field. Whenever Villanova took the lead, Seton Hall would tie it.
"It's pretty hard; it's still hitting me", Frye said of the loss. They made way too many 3s, we gave them too many open looks. "It's been a rough 10 years for all of us, especially UNO, so I really just want to be here to celebrate the victory". The experienced core for the Privateers gets them over in this game.
The Privateers also didn't play with their signature poise at times. He finished with 11 points.
After Robinson and Thibodeaux traded buckets, New Orleans had a chance to take their first lead since 9-7, but came up empty on consecutive opportunities. New Orleans chose not to foul and Robinson's missed jumper gave the Privateers possession with 2.9 seconds left. "So, I think we feel pretty good on the stage where we're sitting". "We've done it two or three times this year, to either put it in overtime or get us a win". "It's sort of like the Saints when they played in the NFC championship game and Super Bowl. There's no failure when you play Villanova basketball".
"We're not thinking about that", they'd say in unison nearly like robots. "We've got to pick up speed and continue building off what we did this year".
