Oregon Ducks have several possibilities on their list for new football coach

November 22 2017, 06:23 | Van Peters

Would Frost go back to the west coast or keep building in Orlando.? This year, OR went 4-8, gave up over 50 points four times in conference play, and now ranks as the third-worst defense in FBS per those same Football Outsiders rankings.

"He's a quality person and handled it with class and professionalism", Mullens said of his Tuesday meeting with Helfrich. "We will not put a timeline on the search".

"Our pool will be broad and diverse", Mullens said.

"Finally, to the players — thank you, and I love you", he said. Dubbed "the mad scientist" for his unorthodox coaching style, he became accustomed to being called a football genius.

The 1-10 49ers play the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Helfrich, previously the Ducks' offensive coordinator, took the reins in 2013 after Chip Kelly left to coach the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. However, in their next three games, the Ducks fell by narrow margins to Nebraska (35-32), future Pac-12 South Champion Colorado (41-38), and then slid to a wider margin loss against Washington State (51-33).

Chip Kelly today said that he reached out to recently fired OR head coach Mark Helfrich but that he hasn't spoken to anyone at the school and that he remains committed to the 49ers. In addition to seeing their streak against the Beavers end, they failed to make a bowl game for the first time since 2004 and their streak of 110 consecutive home sellouts - started in 1999 - came to an end. The program's options are to entice a sitting Power Five coach - perhaps a Dan Mullen from Mississippi State or Jim McElwain from Florida - or dip into the Group of Five, whether Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck or Boise State's Bryan Harsin.

Reitmaier had a big senior season, he will likely see a bump in his final ranking, and he is playing in the Army All-American game January 7, 2017.

It has been 40 years since OR fired a head coach.

After being let go Tuesday night, Helfrich said in a statement according to Rob Moseley, "Plain and simple - we didn't win enough games this season". Last year, the Ducks brought in graduate transfer Vernon Adams, whose season was marred by a finger injury. He said he hadn't reached out to any potential coaches yet. Helfrich was promoted after Chip Kelly left for the National Football League but was unable to maintain the program's place at the top of the Pac-12 and as a playoff contender.

Breeze, whose uncle is former Duck Chad Cota, has spent time around the program before enrolling this summer and said that culture was different this season than in prior ones. Won six conference titles in three leagues during his tenure.
